HONORS
The International Reading Association recognized University of Mobile Reading Council as an Honor Council in May.
The International Reading Association designated University of Mobile Reading Council as a Membership Honor Roll Reading Council in recognition of outstanding membership achievement.
University of Mobile Reading Council received ALA-Star award from the Alabama Reading Council at fall conference at Birmingham.
PROGRAMS
Summary of Program for Luncheon Meetings
On October 9, 2009, Mrs, Brenda Chastain presented children's books and discussed innovative strategies for teaching in the classroom.
On October 26, 2009, Ms. Elizabeth Sessions spoke and demonstrated: Teaching Reading with Technology to members of the council. Dr. Mary Michael Campbell, Past President of Alabama Reading Association, presented the University of Mobile Reading Council with their Honor Council certificate.
On February 22, Dr. Lavada Parmer discussed Moving Forword, a computer program that is used in helping develop reading ability in children with auditory processing difficulties.
On April 9, Ms. Jackie Wesson, writing coach at Mc-David-Jones Elementary School, spoke to the UM Reading Council on staging a writing fair.
PROJECTS
To attract new members and to inform present members,brochures were disseminated to students at the booth that University of Mobile Reading Council had in the Clubs and Organizations Fair that was sponsored by the Student Government Association during fall semester.
University of Mobile Reading Council distributed fliers in classes and university of buildings encouraging families to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar to children on October 8, 2009. Parents were encouraged to continue reading to children everyday
On November 30, University of Mobile Reading Council along with SLATE and Kappa Delta Pi sponsored a seminar, Teaching Children in Poverty, presented by Toni Worsham and Helen Miles of the Mobile County Public Schools.
Mobile Reading Council, SLATE and Kappa Delta Pi sponsored The luncheon speaker was the Alabama Teacher of the Year Luncheon on November 30.
On February 12, 2010 University of Mobile Reading Council along with SLATE and Kappa Delta Pi sponsored a seminar, Making History Come Alive. Thomas Bailey author and Janice Bailey, publisher of the Alabama Roots biographies spoke to the group. Mr. Bailey is author of many of these books. Mr. Bailey fitted Alabama history into United States history. He used impersonations and games in his strategies for teaching history. Further, he taught writing and interviewing strategies. He then involved the students in a practice interview. The student organizations served lunch
Members of University of Mobile Reading Council supported the Metro-Mobile Reading Council's Young Author Conference by mounting student entries on display boards to be viewed during the event.
University of Mobile Reading Council, SLATE, and Kappa Delta Pi join together each semester to give tote bags filled with teacher supplies to the outgoing student teachers. UM Reading Council obtained brochures for the Metro-Mobile Reading Council, Baldwin County Reading Council, Alabama Reading Association, and International Reading Association. To introduce graduates to professional organizations as they enter the teaching field, brochures were placed in the bags along with an IRA journal.
