The Bessemer Reading Council was chartered on Dec. 1, 2001 as an affiliate of the International Reading Association.

The Council is supported by the Bessemer Board of Education through Federal Programs Title II funding.

The focus of the Council is membership, professional development, and community involvement.

[August-26, September-23, November-4, January-27, February-24 + April-28]. 

Projects include: New Teacher Welcome, Book Drive for Soliders, + Books for Babies.

Special Activities include: Charter Day Celebration, ARA Fall Reading Conference, + Outstanding Reading Teacher of the Year.
